Oblivion film takes place in the year 2077. Sixty years earlier, Earth was attacked by aliens known to humans as the Scavengers, or "Scavs" for short. In the war, the Moon was destroyed and the resulting tectonic upheaval and the last-ditch use of nuclear weapons ruined the Earth's ability to support life. Technician #49 ("Tech 49") Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is now one of the last few humans stationed on the planet; the other survivors have migrated to a massive tetrahedral space station called the Tet and established a colony on Titan. He lives in a work tower thousands of feet above the Earth where he and his communications officer and lover Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are part of an operation to extract the planet's remaining resources for the Titan colony's use, especially water. Jack and Victoria underwent a "security wipe" five years prior, which erased their memories and prevents them from giving up information under interrogation. Jack's primary job is the maintenance and support of 'drones', autonomous airborne machines that patrol the landscape to hunt the remaining alien resistance and protect the resource extraction machines. They maintain contact with civilization via a video link with their commander on the Tet, Sally (Melissa Leo), and have two weeks left on their tour of duty, after which they will be allowed to join the rest of humanity. Jack suffers from recurring dreams and flashbacks of being with an unknown woman on the 86th-floor observation deck of the Empire State Building prior to the invasion. Jack also maintains, without Victoria's knowledge, a secluded wooded area featuring a lake and a small cabin which he has stocked with relics of human civilization collected in the course of his duties, such as records, books, and other souvenirs.
